Choosing a TV stand

I have been looking to get a new TV stand and it is so hard knowing what to choose. I much prefer the wooden tv stands or even a cabinet or something older still such as a sideboard or something. I like the look of wood and love wooden furniture and it works well in my house and would suit the sitting room well. However, I think that lcd tv stands work better with modern televisions because they just do not suit wood. It is a shame and I am tempted to hide my TV under a wooden screen or behind a picture because I think that they look so nasty. I would be happy to go without one completely but I know that my husband would not be too pleased about that. I think I will have to talk it over with him and see whether he has any good ideas as to what the best solution would be in order to get something which suits the room and blends in with the current furniture. I have a feeling that it might take us a long time to find something that we both agree on at the right price and it will be interesting finding out what there is out there and whether there is something which will suit both of our tastes and work in the room as well.
